The ATV Jungle Treasure Hunt
The delegates were divided into three teams of six or seven members. Each team was provided with maps of the island, pens, and a series of clues and instructions, with which they planned their routes. The teams also practised their ‘cheerleading chant’ which they taunted the other teams with just before setting off from Anantara.
In the morning, two teams did the ATV and one team the Island Race. After lunch at a seafood restaurant, the teams did the reverse. There were nine clues for the ATV and eight clues for Samui’s famous (or infamous) landmarks and curious places to find for the Island Race.
The ATV race was a challenge for some people who had never ridden a quad bike before and a lot of (safe) fun was had by all. At each location the teams also had to take a photo using the clues given, later to be voted on by the other teams at the debriefing.
As they travelled, the teams saw much of the beauty of Koh Samui in far-flung areas of the island. The first team back in the time limit, with the most mysteries solved and the most voted photos, won the game. Any team arriving late was deducted points; fortunately all teams returned on time.
- Deciphering clues to work out locations on the map
- Planning a course through the jungle and around Samui to visit all locations within the time limit provided
- Using the map or clues and directing the driver / leader where to go
- Working as a team to answer as many riddles as possible within
the time limit and finishing first
- Taking themed photos at each location
Leadership & Planning - People within each team took up varying leadership roles. Planning was required to figure out the clues in the jungle during the ATV and map out the course they would take around Koh Samui during the Island Race.
Communication & Creativity - Teams needed to communicate effectively with each other and the teams most successful achieved this. Also, each team was provided with a Thai driver who spoke limited English. Teams needed to be creative in how they communicated where they wished to go to the Thai driver. Teams used various techniques ranging from:
- Using simple English
- Using body language
- Using the map
- Stopping to find someone who spoke English and Thai to communicate
Pro-activity & Change - The most successful teams were those who were proactive in using the resources available to them. Planning also needed to be adapted as the time limit approached and teams realised they weren’t going to find all the clues. Each riddle was worth a different amount points and there were bonus points rewarded for finishing within the time limit. Teams who arrived late were penalised points. Teams had to balance points for answering clues versus points for the time limit.
Understanding & cooperation - Teams who worked together and understood each other’s strengths and weaknesses were the most effective in cooperating with each other. Teams who cooperated the best achieved the better scores in the event.
